IHBC welcomes UK values in Scotland’s new ‘BAR Toolkit’

The IHBC has welcomed in particular the UK-wide relevance of Scotland’s newly launched ‘Buildings At Risk (BAR) Toolkit’, supported by Historic Scotland and The Architectural Heritage Fund, which contains eighteen sections of practical advice and case studies developed for ‘BAR’ use by IHBC member, and Scotland Branch Chair, Stuart Eydmann.

IHBC Policy Secretary David Kincaid said ‘The IHBC is delighted to welcome this publication of the Scottish ‘BAR Toolkit’. The toolkit obviously has a Scottish emphasis but much of the advice and guidance is applicable to England, Wales and N Ireland.  It contains helpful advice about: identifying BARs; practical steps to stop the rot; while even the legal context to deal with problem buildings, though not 100% applicable to the rest of the UK, can offer useful and stimulating ideas and strategies.’

Bob Kindred, IHBC’s Education Committee Vice Chair and IHBC Research Notes Author added: ‘I greatly welcome the launch of this BAR Toolkit while it was a privilege to be asked to comment on the draft.’

‘This is an important and comprehensive piece of work.  It will do much to help advance the resolution of buildings-at-risk issues in Scotland, although significant generic lessons can also be drawn from the Toolkit across the UK.’

‘Having been directly involved with buildings-at-risk issues since 1986, I know how vital practical, well-thought-through and exemplary guidance such as this can be.  Conservation professionals will benefit hugely from Stuart Eydmann’s wide-ranging and thorough approach and publication is warmly commended’
